Daniell Cell Demonstration Apparatus

Daniell Cell Demonstration Apparatus

Product Code : SCL-EAE-11319

The Daniell Cell Demonstration Apparatus is a primary voltaic cell used to demonstrate how a spontaneous redox reaction converts chemical energy into electrical energy. Its separated copper and zinc electrode systems allow students to investigate electrode polarity, electron flow, cell EMF and electrochemical energy conversion.

Product Description

The apparatus uses a heavy-gauge copper outer vessel as the positive electrode. A porous pot separates the internal zinc-electrode compartment from the surrounding copper-electrode system while permitting ionic conduction between the electrolytes. A perforated internal shelf is provided for copper sulphate crystals.

A zinc-amalgam rod fitted with a wooden supporting cap acts as the negative electrode. The zinc rod and copper vessel each include a 4 mm terminal socket for connection to suitable laboratory leads and measuring instruments. When correctly prepared, the working cell produces an electromotive force of approximately 1.1 V.

Key Features

  • Working primary voltaic cell: Demonstrates direct conversion of chemical energy into electrical energy.
  • Approximate 1.1 V EMF: Provides a measurable low-voltage output under suitable experimental conditions.
  • Copper positive electrode: The heavy-gauge outer vessel serves as the cell’s positive terminal.
  • Zinc negative electrode: A zinc-amalgam rod forms the negative electrode system.
  • Porous-pot separation: Keeps the electrode solutions separated while supporting ionic conduction.
  • Crystal shelf: An internal perforated shelf accommodates copper sulphate crystals.
  • 4 mm terminal sockets: Supports connection to standard compatible laboratory leads.

How to Use

  1. Inspect the copper vessel, porous pot and zinc rod for damage.
  2. Prepare the required electrolyte solutions at the prescribed concentrations.
  3. Position the porous pot inside the copper vessel.
  4. Place the zinc electrode in its designated compartment using the supporting cap.
  5. Add copper sulphate crystals to the perforated shelf where required.
  6. Connect a high-impedance voltmeter to the 4 mm terminals.
  7. Observe electrode polarity and record the cell EMF.
  8. Disconnect the circuit and clean the apparatus after the experiment.

Safety note: Wear laboratory gloves and eye protection. Copper and zinc salt solutions must be handled according to the relevant safety data sheets. Do not ingest chemicals, short-circuit the cell or dispose of solutions into ordinary drains.

Care & Maintenance

  • Empty and rinse the apparatus after each completed experiment.
  • Prevent copper sulphate deposits from obstructing the perforated shelf.
  • Handle the porous pot carefully to prevent cracking.
  • Keep terminal sockets clean, dry and free from corrosion.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Daniell Cell Demonstration Apparatus used for?

It demonstrates how a spontaneous electrochemical reaction produces an electric potential between zinc and copper electrodes.

What voltage does the cell produce?

The manufacturer specifies an approximate working EMF of 1.1 V.

Which electrode is positive?

The copper outer vessel acts as the positive electrode, while the zinc-amalgam rod acts as the negative electrode.

What is the purpose of the porous pot?

It separates the electrode solutions while permitting ionic movement needed to complete the internal circuit.

Are electrolyte chemicals included?

The product page does not confirm supplied chemicals or solution concentrations. These must be checked before ordering.

Can a standard laboratory voltmeter be connected?

Yes. Both electrodes have 4 mm terminal sockets for compatible laboratory leads.
