Pencil Jockey Apparatus

Pencil Jockey Apparatus

Product Code : SCL-EAE-11258

The Pencil Jockey Apparatus is a handheld electrical contact probe used to locate balance points on meter bridge, Wheatstone bridge and potentiometer resistance wires. It provides students and laboratory users with a controlled temporary contact while observing galvanometer deflection during supervised electrical measurement experiments.

Product Description

The apparatus has a moulded insulating handle that allows the user to move the contact safely along a resistance wire. Its brass-plated contact end touches the wire at a selected point without forming a permanent circuit connection. A locating notch assists controlled placement over the bridge wire.

The pencil jockey is used as an accessory rather than as a complete measuring instrument. It works with a galvanometer, bridge wire, resistance box, power source and related circuit components to identify the null or balance position in resistance and potential-difference experiments.

Key Features

  • Bakelite-moulded handle: Provides an insulated gripping section for laboratory use.
  • Brass-plated contact: Creates temporary electrical contact with the resistance wire.
  • Locating notch: Helps position the contact point accurately over the wire.
  • Pencil-style format: Supports controlled movement along a graduated bridge or potentiometer wire.
  • Momentary contact: Allows readings to be checked without maintaining continuous pressure.
  • Multiple apparatus compatibility: Suitable for meter bridges, Wheatstone bridges and compatible potentiometers.
  • Reusable laboratory accessory: Designed for repeated student practical work when correctly handled.

What's Included in the Kit

  • 1 × Pencil Jockey Apparatus

A meter bridge, potentiometer, galvanometer, resistance box, power supply and connecting leads are not included unless specifically stated.

Applications / Uses

How to Use the Pencil Jockey Apparatus

  1. Complete the meter bridge or potentiometer circuit with the power switched off.
  2. Connect the jockey to the galvanometer circuit when the model includes a connection terminal.
  3. Switch on the circuit and check the galvanometer response.
  4. Hold the jockey only by its insulated handle.
  5. Touch the resistance wire briefly near one end and observe the galvanometer deflection.
  6. Move the jockey along the wire and make light, momentary contacts.
  7. Locate the point where galvanometer deflection becomes zero or changes direction.
  8. Read the corresponding position from the bridge or potentiometer scale.
  9. Remove the jockey contact before changing circuit connections.

Handling note: Do not drag the contact tip continuously along the resistance wire. Excess pressure can scratch, stretch or alter the uniformity of the wire and affect experimental results.

Care & Maintenance

  • Keep the brass contact clean, smooth and free from corrosion.
  • Do not sharpen or reshape the contact tip unless specified by the manufacturer.
  • Protect the Bakelite handle from impact and excessive heat.
  • Store the jockey separately from heavy apparatus that could bend its contact section.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Pencil Jockey Apparatus used for?

It is used to make temporary contact with a resistance wire and locate the balance or null point in meter bridge and potentiometer experiments.

Why is it called a pencil jockey?

Its elongated insulated handle is held and moved in a manner similar to a pencil while its contact end touches the bridge wire.

Can it be used with a Wheatstone bridge?

It is suitable for slide-wire or meter-bridge versions of the Wheatstone bridge where a movable contact is required.

Does the jockey measure resistance directly?

No. It identifies a balance position. Resistance is then calculated using the circuit values and measured balance length.

Should the jockey be pressed firmly on the wire?

No. Apply only enough pressure to obtain momentary electrical contact. Heavy pressure may damage the resistance wire.

Is a meter bridge included?

No. The Pencil Jockey Apparatus is supplied as an individual accessory unless a complete apparatus set is specifically ordered.

Order the Pencil Jockey Apparatus from Lab Equipments Ambala or explore the related meter bridge and potentiometer range for complete resistance-measurement setups.
